What We Do
Charity is at the heart of our work and our faith — and it always has been. For the Knights of Columbus, charity means supporting a virtually boundless variety of projects.
We are men who lead, serve, protect and defend, whether we are giving out Coats for Kids, lending a hand in disaster relief efforts, supporting local pregnancy centers by donating ultrasound machines, fundraising for Charities, Veteran support, Food Bank Donations, Parish volunteer support, assistance in numerous projects for our affiliated Catholic parishes St. Patrick's and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Environment initiatives-clean ups, etc. Our charitable activities encompass an almost infinite variety of local, national and international projects. Our own unique charities include the Disaster Relief, Ultrasound Initiative, and Coats for Kids. Special Olympics, Wheelchair Mission, Catholic Citizen Essay Contest, Veterans/First Responders, Seminarian Support and Faith in Action
Our Knights and their families have greater opportunities to participate in a variety of activities that deepen their faith, promote the New Evangelization, and strengthen our parishes.
"We are answering Pope Francis’ call to go to the peripheries,” Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said. “We can reach halfway around the globe to help those in need and we can reach to our neighbor next door. And we do that every day. That makes us witnesses to the faith."
If you’d like to be a part of an international organization of nearly 2 million Catholic men whose principal work involves helping others in need, we'd like to meet you and invite you to join us {provide Link}.
Here below are brief outlines of some of Our Programs:
SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Celebrate the worth and dignity of every human being through the Special Olympics. The Knights work with Special Olympics affiliates to determine how best to fund, sponsor or volunteer for events in our local community. This unique partnership with the Special Olympics and has helped disabled athletes train for and compete in games around the state and region. We have assisted with all aspects of the program from fundraising to feeding the athletes, organizing, and judging events, and providing equipment and awards. Without this support of the Knights, participants would not be able to train for the events that they love. We provide monetary donations or hundreds of service hours in a fraternal year.
ULTRASOUND
Save lives by helping women choose life by giving them the opportunity to view their unborn children on ultrasound machines at pro-life pregnancy centers. This initiative is funded by Knights of Columbus state and local councils with matching grants from the Supreme Council’s Culture of Life Fund. We work together as an organization to purchase ultrasound machines for qualifying pregnancy centers. Discounted prices for select machines are offered through preferred pricing agreements arranged by the Supreme Council. The list of preferred machines is provided to sponsoring councils after the pregnancy center is approved for funding by the local council and the Supreme Council. After the state and/or local council raises 50% of the cost, the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council will provide the other 50% to complete funding for purchase of an ultrasound.
COATS FOR KIDS
Councils across Westchester Putnam can purchase new winter coats at a discount to be distributed to the children in need in their local communities. Providing warmth for children in need during cold winter months; the goal of the Coats for Kids program is to ensure that no child in our region goes without a coat during the winter season. Through the dedication of our local councils hundreds of new winter coats have been distributed to children annually.
WHEELCHAIR MISSION
Help change the lives of people with disabilities! Our local councils donate at least $150 for a wheelchair and through local partnerships, we can also purchase a large container of wheelchairs for their own donation sites, such as our local Veterans Hospitals and Facilities. Presenting wheelchairs to local veterans and neighbors in need or donating funds to benefit them, mobility brings with it independence and dignity. Obtained at discounted prices, these wheelchairs change the lives of their recipients.
CATHOLIC CITIZENSHIP ESSAY CONTEST
Encourage youth to become citizens grounded in their faith through creative writing. Open to all qualifying Catholic students. This contest encourages today’s youth to be more connected to their community and their faith. The goal of this program is to involve young Catholics in grades 8 to 12 (public, private, parochial, or home schools during the current school year) in civic discourse and instill in them religious and life-affirming values. The essay should be 500-750 words on a specific topic, changing every other year. Entrants will be judged on grammar, style, and how clearly they present the theme in a way that showcases creativity, imagination and overall development of the topic.
FAITH IN ACTION
Support Vocations programs assists our seminarians and postulants with financial and moral assistance. As the strong right arm of the church, the Knights of Columbus are committed to providing moral, financial, and spiritual support to future priests and religious at all stages of their formation. We support our local Parishes in volunteer programs of Ushering at Sunday Masses and Special Liturgies; Communion Breakfasts; Food collection drives for the Hungry; Wake Services for our Deceased Brother Knights; Holy Hours, and opportunities for prayer and reflection together as a fraternity. Under the guidance of our chaplain, our councils regularly hear spiritual reflections together or help organize our own event for the men of the parishes of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. Patrick's Yorktown NY.
